If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?
If I could meet any historical figure, I would choose Maya Angelou. She was so much more than a celebrated poet. She was a memoirist whose life story reshaped how many of us understand courage; a civil rights activist who stood alongside figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X; and a storyteller who spoke with a rare blend of honesty and dignity.
What draws me to her is the way she held her experiences — both the painful and the uplifting — with such grounded strength. She never shied away from the difficult parts of her life, yet she always found a way to turn them into truth, wisdom, and connection. Her words didn’t offer quick fixes; they offered steadiness. They made you feel seen.
If I had the chance to sit with her, I’d want to ask how she managed to stay open-hearted through so much change and challenge. How she found resilience without becoming hardened, and how she kept compassion at the centre of her voice.
I imagine the conversation wouldn’t be dramatic or grand. It would be simple, direct, and deeply human — the kind of exchange that leaves you walking away a little steadier than before.
